In a terrifying turn of events, two construction cranes were hoisting a gigantic steel ramp of a bridge on the deck of a barge when one crane buckled under the weight of the ramp, pulling the other down with it. The base of the two cranes fell into a canal in Alphen naan den Rijn, South Holland as the booms and ramp completely destroyed several nearby houses and businesses.
Originally, authorities believed 20 people to be injured, but have since retracted that statement, not claiming on 1 man was injured, complaining of hip injuries. There are also reports that that man was found by sniffer dogs and pulled from the rubble, amazingly.
The crews had been renovating a bridge over the Old Rhine River, which began this Spring and was expected to be completed at the end of summer. The Dutch Safety Board has reportedly begun an investigation of the accident. There is no speculation yet as to how this tragic event will affect the project’s completion date
