There’s a small, but growing, fear in the construction industry that robots will soon make construction jobs obsolete, but, in all reality, the next logical step is for technology and robotics to first enhance the jobs of human construction workers.  There is a lot of money being poured into the industry every day, looking for the next big piece of technology to take over jobsites by storm. A few recent examples are a bionic suit aimed at construction workers and an augmented reality smart hard hat.  The next idea may make scaling walls at construction sites extremely easy.

Seattle is in the middle of a construction boom.  With that, comes a series of challenges, such as the struggle to fill jobs, an enormous amount of noise that irritates residents, and even a skyline filled with the most out of any other city in the country.  That’s right, you may not have guessed it, but Seattle’s 58 cranes lining the city’s skyline are the most in America currently, with the next closest being Los Angeles, California with 40.  Amazingly, 58 cranes is also the number currently being used to build one single project oversees: the new Istanbul Airport, which is currently on track to be the world’s largest after completion.

Nike Makes a Construction Boot?

Until recently, I had no idea that Nike even made field boots, especially ones that could be used on a construction site.  The men's Special Field boot is designed by Nike for first responders, military, rescue, and law enforcement, but if you ask me, it would be perfect for the jobsite.  Some of the key features of this boot are its lightweight design, flexibility, and breathable materials.

As the construction labor shortage rages on throughout the industry, there have been concerns of how overworked employees or undertrained staff may affect job site safety.  Although there’s no definitive proof that this problem is causing an increase in construction deaths and injuries, recently released Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows trends pointing in the wrong direction.

[VIDEO] No Construction Site is Complete Without a Disco Ball Concrete Truck

I’m not afraid to admit that I once with through a short phase in my life when I was really into disco music.  I was a child and those were the only dance moves I knew.  You may think you hate disco music, but you have to admit, at minimum, your leg starts bouncing or your head starts bobbing when Rick James, KC & The Sunshine Band, or the Bee Gees come on the radio.

So, you can blame that period in my life for taking the time to write about a concrete mix truck that’s been dressed up as a disco ball.

Trenches are a construction jobsite hazard that happen on nearly every construction site involving dirt work, but, all too often their dangers are underestimated.  In fact, trench related deaths in 2016 have more than doubled as compared to 2015.  There’s no excuse for allowing a trench related death to happen, but it’s rare that job site supervision suffers criminal charges after one occurs.  After the death of a 22 year old New York construction worker, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office took a hard stance against those responsible and announced formally sentenced the on-site foreman last week.
