First, let me formally apologize to our non-American readers for calling the sport Soccer, but, since it is Olympics time, I have to stay loyal to my country. As soccer is the world’s most popular sport, many would argue that no changes need to be made to improve it. Well, a group of people have taken it upon themselves to create a super intense and over-the-top version of the game that I think all of us Construction Junkies will enjoy.
The annual Fastracs auto soccer game combines soccer with demolition derby and heavy construction equipment to create a bizarre and innovative event that adrenaline seekers will love. Taking place in Red Hook, New York, this is the 3rd year in a row for the event and is put on by Fastracs Excavating Inc, who is also out of Red Hook.
The sport uses crawler excavators as the goalies, demolition derby cars as the players, and an 8 foot diameter soccer ball. It’s pretty impressive to see the cars maneuver around each other pushing the giant ball without causing any major wrecks. It wouldn’t surprise me if the game caused a few wrecks along the adjacent street, as there’s no doubt this game caused some heads to turn.
Excavators aren’t only good at being goalies, they’re also excellent basketball players, Jenga players, and hot dog assemblers, which leads us to ask: is anyone using excavators to do actual work anymore?
