Totus Solutions

Theft is a big problem on job sites and it’s next to impossible to lock up and secure all of the valuable items on a job site at all times.  According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), there’s about a billion dollars worth of theft each year in the construction industry alone.  ONE BILLION.  That’s a lot of money to just be walking off of the job site.

Unless you constantly work with 2D drawings, it’s extremely difficult for someone to determine what the final product will look like, which leads to tons of last second changes and a mad dash to finish on time.  While Revit’s three and four-dimensional drawings are a step in the right direction, Trimble and Microsoft have an idea to get those models out of the computer and onto the job site.

A New "Bio" Concrete Additive That Heals Its Own Cracks

May 19, 2015 William Lucus

Delft University

Back in late 2012, a team of Dutch scientists began work on a new type of concrete additive.  All concrete additives modify the physical properties of the concrete in some way, whether by making the concrete harder, set faster, or more resistant to cracking.  However, what the Dutch team set out to do was to make a concrete that was "alive;"

EquipmentShare Allows Contractors to Rent Idle Equipment To and From Other Contractors

EquipmentShare

It was only a matter of time before someone created a group sharing platform for heavy construction equipment, and EquipmentShare has won the race to market.  Back in April we wrote a piece about a Purchasing.com survey that showed heavy equipment rentals were on the rise in the construction industry. One way to capitalize on that trend it to find a way to rent your company’s equipment while it’s just standing idly by.

Windows 10 Will Soon Make Other Tablets Irrelevant

Microsoft Windows 10

Microsoft Windows 10

Tablets are the latest hot ticket item in the construction industry, everyone either wants to or is using them, and we think that’s great.  The iPad and Android tablets have basically controlled the tablet market since its creation, and for good reason: Windows has failed to make their tablets friendly to app developers.  While Windows tablets are typically more powerful (see Microsoft Surface Pro 3) than its competitors and can run full versions of all the programs you use on your desktop and laptop (like Microsoft Office and, amazingly, Adobe Photoshop, the Windows app store is noticeably bare and keeps a lot of potential users away.

With the recent release of Avengers 2, there’s no better time to discuss the world’s first bionic suit made specifically with the construction industry in mind.  Unfortunately, unlike the suit Iron Man wears, this one doesn’t allow you to fly or shoot beams out of your hands, but it does show some unbelievable upside for the productivity of a manual laborer.

Blocklayer Has a Calculator for the Most Annoying Construction Calculations

April 29, 2015 Shane Hedmond
blocklayer

Sometimes walls aren't straight and corners aren't at 90 degree angles and we’re left scratching our heads trying to figure out exactly how to lay out a frame or rebar.  Many times we’re caught in situations that we have never seen before and instead of trial and error (which causes expensive rework), a nice and simple calculator could save a whole lot of time and frustration.

tsheets

We’re all for reducing paper use at Construction Junkie and, if you’re still using paper time sheets, it’s time to take a step in the right direction and automate your process. With many jobsites being far away from your company’s office, transferring paper time sheets can be extremely time consuming and costly.
