If you need to put together a quick estimate or just gain some general information on a building or site, you can gain some valuable information using Google Maps.
Google Maps allows you to measure lengths and areas based upon their satellite imagery. You wouldn’t want to rely solely on this information, but it can be a very useful tool for preliminary estimates or planning purposes.
All you need to do is find your site or building on google maps, enable the “satellite” mode and then right click anywhere on the map. This message will then appear on your map:
Click “Measure Distance” and Maps will then allow you to click any point on the map. Click a second time and a line will appear between the two points you selected. If you connect all of the lines, Maps will even calculate your area for you, you’ll be able to find that in the upper left hand corner under the search box, like in the picture below:
