CAT Announces First Ever Phone with Built-in Thermal Imaging

February 22, 2016 Shane Hedmond
CAT S60

In the past, we’ve mentioned several good reason why you should use a thermal imaging camera on your jobsites. It’s been understandable why they haven’t been used much in the past, it’s a very expensive piece of equipment with a very specific use and they weren’t easy at all to carry around safely.  FLIR took huge steps forward with thermal imaging price and mobility with their FLIR One smart phone thermal imaging attachment last year. Now, CAT has teamed with FLIR to release the first phone ever with integrated thermal imaging capabilities.

Is Electrified Concrete the Answer to Snow and Ice Buildup on Roads?

February 18, 2016 Shane Hedmond
electrified concrete

Snow and ice on roads is an expensive and dangerous problem, not only for cities, but for motorists and businesses.  The cities have to pay for a fleet of trucks to dump salt and other chemicals on roads, as well as plow.  Motorists get into an increased amount of traffic accidents in poor driving conditions and also have to deal with the after effects of all of that salt destroying the undercarriage of their cars.  Businesses suffer legal claims from not being able to keep their sidewalks clear or increased costs from plowing and shoveling.

New Milwaukee Work Gloves Allow You to Use Smart Phones and Tablets

February 4, 2016 Shane Hedmond
milwaukee demolition gloves

Whether you like it or not (we LOVE it), technology is forcing its way onto the job sites, through the use of smart phones, tablets, and wearables.  The problem is, it’s a hassle to wear work gloves and try to use your devices.

Milwaukee Tool’s new demolition work gloves will not only solve the clash of work gloves and technology, they’re also not sacrificing durability to make it happen.  With reinforced fingertips, palms, and thumbs, the new gloves provide strength and grip to the most used areas of your hand.  The knuckles also have a protection pad to guard against scrapes and impact. Don’t worry about comfort, either, as the gloves are made out of a breathable lining and have a mesh backing that helps wick away sweat.  The backs of the gloves are also lined with terry cloth to wipe the sweat off of your face.

In order to use your touchscreen devices, Milwaukee has smartly installed a SMARTSWIPE Knuckle, which will allow your touch to be picked up by your device.  It’s smart to use the knuckle, because you won’t smear up your screen with your dirty fingers.

The gloves, which will be available in February of 2016 and will be priced at $24.99

Milwaukee Tool Releases Guide for Cleaning Tools to Help Prevent Spread of COVID-19
Apr 15, 2020

Construction has been designated as essential business in most areas of the country, but that doesn’t necessarily mean construction workers don’t have any risk of contracting or spreading the disease. Chances are, you’ve probably never washed your power tools before, because, well, tools are supposed to get dirty. But, in the time of an unprecedented pandemic, now might just be the time to start, as it might allow you to do your part in slowing the spread.

A Complete Guide to Milwaukee Tool’s M18 Battery Lineup
Aug 8, 2019

For years, Milwaukee has made it very clear that they will continue to keep their M18 platform as their core system.  Cordless tool users spend a ton of money into batteries these days, and the company’s goal is to not force them into investing into a new cordless system. That means that Milwaukee has to come up with innovative ways to provide the tools users want while being limited to 18 volts.

Review: Milwaukee M18 Radius Compact Site Light with Flood Mode
Jun 22, 2018

Proper lighting is one of the most overlooked things on a construction site.  Sure, most sites have some overhead lighting, but with a minimum of only 5 loot candles required by OSHA in general construction areas, there’s a lot left to be desired.  Milwaukee Tool is, by far, the leader in the construction lighting category based on shear volume and quality of their lighting solutions.

February 3, 2016 Shane Hedmond

On small jobs, the more versatile your machinery, the better.  Budgets are much tighter, so there’s no room for error.  We’ve seen some very interesting attachments for excavators, such as this one that turns the bucket into a hammer with the switch of a button, but we’ve never seen a machine quite as versatile as the Diverto QS100.

Building Tunnels with the Zipper Truck System

February 1, 2016 William Lucus

Arches have been used throughout the centuries, but they have always required large amounts of form work (or a master mason).  Now, at least when it comes to tunneling, arches require one of the largest machines in the world.  The Zipper truck system, known as Arch Lock, is basically a mobile arch form work that, when used with precast concrete wedges, creates an instantly strong system.

This Company is Literally Growing Bricks Like Plants

Green building is not just a trend anymore, it is making huge impacts all across the construction industry, whether by government regulation or market shifts.  According to the US Green Building Council, the Green Construction Industry will account for 1/3 of all construction projects by the year 2018.  That’s certainly something to pay attention to.  But it’s not just building practices that are affected by green building trends, products are affected, as well.  A startup company in Raleigh, North Carolina has a solution for the high carbon dioxide emissions created by firing bricks in kilns: growing them in a plant with bacteria and water.

Scientists Create First Fire Proof Self-Compacting Concrete

Self-compacting concrete, which does not need to be vibrated to become fully compacted, has many advantages on a job site, such as lower overall costs, faster construction times, no need for a concrete vibrator, and thinner concrete sections.  One of the major disadvantages of this type of concrete, however, is that it’s notoriously poor in regards to fire resistance.  Traditional concrete solves the fire resistance problem by adding polypropylene (PP) fiber, which allow the concrete structure to stay intact when it comes in contact with fire.

Could Roads Made Out of Recycled Plastic be Superior to Asphalt?

January 18, 2016 William Lucus

The two major issues with asphalt roadways are their lifespan and their vulnerability to weather and temperature. The optimum lifespan of an asphalt road is about 25 years and that is dependent on a large variety of factors.  In the Northern United States, this lifespan could substantially less, 15 to 20 years.   One of the largest frustrations with our current road systems is the time it takes to build and resurface roadways. Many of the solutions proposed are costly and un-sustainable.
