GE Will No Longer Make CFL Lightbulbs

Compact Fluorescent (CFL) lightbulbs had a good run in our new-ish energy saving world, but one gigantic company is going to stop making them, in favor of LEDs. In a series of breakup letters written to CFLs and love letters to LED bulbs, GE announced that it would stop making CFLs in 2016. CFL bulbs are notorious for taking a while to brighten up a room and their signature ice cream cone swirl shape isn’t great for aesthetics.  They’re also filled with mercury, which make them tricky to get rid of.

If you ever want to feel old and stupid, hand a child a smart phone and watch them navigate through it like it’s an extension of their hand.  They can pick up on things incredibly quick and these kids will be our betters one day (unless we act quick…look out kiddos).

Could Bamboo Replace Steel in Reinforced Concrete?

February 5, 2016 Shane Hedmond
bamboo reinforced concrete

Steel has had a foothold on the construction industry for roughly 100 years, because it’s high in strength and aids in the tensile strength of concrete.  But is it the best material for reinforcing concrete?  Swiss architect Dirk Hebel doesn’t think so.

New Milwaukee Work Gloves Allow You to Use Smart Phones and Tablets

February 4, 2016 Shane Hedmond
milwaukee demolition gloves

Whether you like it or not (we LOVE it), technology is forcing its way onto the job sites, through the use of smart phones, tablets, and wearables.  The problem is, it’s a hassle to wear work gloves and try to use your devices.

Milwaukee Tool’s new demolition work gloves will not only solve the clash of work gloves and technology, they’re also not sacrificing durability to make it happen.  With reinforced fingertips, palms, and thumbs, the new gloves provide strength and grip to the most used areas of your hand.  The knuckles also have a protection pad to guard against scrapes and impact. Don’t worry about comfort, either, as the gloves are made out of a breathable lining and have a mesh backing that helps wick away sweat.  The backs of the gloves are also lined with terry cloth to wipe the sweat off of your face.

In order to use your touchscreen devices, Milwaukee has smartly installed a SMARTSWIPE Knuckle, which will allow your touch to be picked up by your device.  It’s smart to use the knuckle, because you won’t smear up your screen with your dirty fingers.

The gloves, which will be available in February of 2016 and will be priced at $24.99

Milwaukee Tool Releases Guide for Cleaning Tools to Help Prevent Spread of COVID-19
Apr 15, 2020

Construction has been designated as essential business in most areas of the country, but that doesn’t necessarily mean construction workers don’t have any risk of contracting or spreading the disease. Chances are, you’ve probably never washed your power tools before, because, well, tools are supposed to get dirty. But, in the time of an unprecedented pandemic, now might just be the time to start, as it might allow you to do your part in slowing the spread.

A Complete Guide to Milwaukee Tool’s M18 Battery Lineup
Aug 8, 2019

For years, Milwaukee has made it very clear that they will continue to keep their M18 platform as their core system.  Cordless tool users spend a ton of money into batteries these days, and the company’s goal is to not force them into investing into a new cordless system. That means that Milwaukee has to come up with innovative ways to provide the tools users want while being limited to 18 volts.

Review: Milwaukee M18 Radius Compact Site Light with Flood Mode
Jun 22, 2018

Proper lighting is one of the most overlooked things on a construction site.  Sure, most sites have some overhead lighting, but with a minimum of only 5 loot candles required by OSHA in general construction areas, there’s a lot left to be desired.  Milwaukee Tool is, by far, the leader in the construction lighting category based on shear volume and quality of their lighting solutions.

On small jobs, the more versatile your machinery, the better.  Budgets are much tighter, so there’s no room for error.  We’ve seen some very interesting attachments for excavators, such as this one that turns the bucket into a hammer with the switch of a button, but we’ve never seen a machine quite as versatile as the Diverto QS100.

Building Tunnels with the Zipper Truck System

February 1, 2016 William Lucus

Arches have been used throughout the centuries, but they have always required large amounts of form work (or a master mason).  Now, at least when it comes to tunneling, arches require one of the largest machines in the world.  The Zipper truck system, known as Arch Lock, is basically a mobile arch form work that, when used with precast concrete wedges, creates an instantly strong system.
