StructionSite – Automated 360 Degree Photo Documentation for Construction

December 5, 2019 Shane Hedmond

Photo documentation is an extremely important part of any construction project for communication and quality control, but taking pictures with your phone or camera on the jobsite is very inefficient process. Uploading, organizing, renaming, and, ultimately finding those pictures later on is a very tedious process.

StructionSite solves that problem by combining 360 degree video with an intuitive software that automatically maps where the images were taken on your jobsite. Users of their software don’t need to rename and organize hundreds of photos, because they’re mapped directly onto a floor plan and time stamped within the app. That time savings helps your team quickly communicate with subcontractors and allows your office staff to stay on top of progress.

VideoWalk

With StructionSite’s VideoWalk, Your entire jobsite can be documented in just 3 simple steps: upload your plans, mark your starting location on the app, and, finally, perform your normal jobsite walk.  As you walk, the app will automatically track your current location and map your path. As much as 30,000 square feet of your project can be captured in about 5 minutes.

One of my favorite features is the ability to view a side-by-side image of the same room view, but at different times of the project.  For example, you could select one side to show you the room when the utilities were roughed-in and the other side to show the finished room.  It effectively allows you to see through walls.

The side-by-side view also works with 3D BIM Models, for a quick comparison between what was designed and what was built. That’s a huge value to contractors for quality control and a great way to impress a building owner.

Production Tracking – Coming Soon!

StructionSite isn’t just stopping at photo documentation, though, as these images are packed with powerful data points.  I was able to speak with the CEO of StructionSIte, Matt Daly, at Groundbreak 2019 and he teased a new product his team is working on for the future.

In 2020, StructionSite plans to release an Artificial Intelligence-based production tracking tool that will be able to passively measure the amount of installed work on your job.  It all will work in the background, so there’s no additional hardware needed to power the AI software. Manual production tracking is an extremely time consuming task and, in most cases, an educated guess. Using AI to analyze photo and video will make this type of tracking so much more accessible to contractors.

Integrations

To avoid those pesky data silos our industry is used to, StructionSite has built integrations with several popular construction software platforms, including Procore, BIM 360, Navisworks, Egnyte, and several cloud storage platforms. The company also recently announced that they will be a part of Procore’s new Embedded Experience, which allows the full version of 3rd party apps to be used directly in Procore’s platform.

For more information about StructionSIte, you can visit their website at www.structionsite.com and check out my interview with Matt Daly at Groundbreak 2019 below!

[VIDEO] Baubot, the Robot That Wants to Be Every Trade on the Jobsite
Apr 28, 2021

While still new in the construction industries, robots are typically designed to perform a specific task in a highly precise and efficient way, like the rebar tying robot, Tybot or the brick-laying robot Hadrian X. More recently, though, robots are being imagined as platforms for 3rd party companies to develop hardware and accessories to attach to the base robot, like the Boston Dynamics robotic dog, Spot. I recently came across a new robot, called Baubot, which hopes to one day perform tasks using every tool on a typical jobsite.
