The 13 Most Promising Construction Technologies We Learned about in 2015

January 8, 2016 Shane Hedmond
best construction technologies 2015

Other than power tools, the construction industry has been historically slow to adapt to technology.  We’re seeing some slow and subtle infiltration into the industry, but the most promising aspect is that more and more technology is being designed specifically for the construction professional.  There’s a clear market opportunity and hundreds of companies are trying to get their piece of the pie.

Scientists Develop Roads That Can De-Ice Themselves

Ice and snow on roads cause increased traffic accidents and businesses and school to close.  The most popular defenses against ice build-up is to salt or sand roads, sidewalks and driveways, but it’s expensive for cities to send out trucks to drop it.  Not only that, but most of it gets picked up by cars or wash away when the snow and ice melts, causing it to need to be re-applied.

The metallic structure is called microlattice and it is 99.99% air.  In fact, it's so light that it can balance on top of a dandelion.   The microlattice takes a queue from nature and mirrors bone structure to gain its strength, rigidity, and lightness.

Watch the Second Largest Haul Truck in the World Get Assembled

The Liebherr T 282 C is one of the largest haul trucks in the world, in terms of payload capacity, and its assembly is no less impressive.  In fact, the size of the haul truck requires a tower crane for final assembly.  These mining trucks, due to their size, are not built like your normal sedan.  There are nearly no stamped parts and every piece is welded together for strength and durability.

It is also an international affair, many of the parts come from Germany, Canada and the United States and the final assembly in this case takes place in Australia.   The hauler itself without payload is over 237 tons and with a full load it can reach a total gross vehicle weight of over 600 tons. That means that the Lieberr T 282 C has the payload capacity equal to the weight of a Boeing 747.

[VIDEO] Need to Get Some Heavy Equipment Up a Mountain? Try a Cable Car System
Feb 2, 2021

Remote jobsites with difficult terrain pose some substantial logistical challenges when it comes to getting equipment and materials on site. I’ve seen several different methods used in the past, such as heavy equipment carrying blimps, cargo planes, helicopters, and the Fat Truck, but I recently came across a new method: a cable car.

[VIDEO] Helicopter Drops Cooling Tower During Lift to Roof
Jan 22, 2021

If you need to get some heavy mechanical equipment on the roof of your project, you could use a boring old crane – or you could gas up the bird and make that equipment take literal flight. Alright, so cranes aren’t actually boring, but some times a helicopter makes more logistical sense, either because it reduces total lift time or, in some cases, makes economical sense. Either way, there are some important safety precautions to take in case something goes wrong.

Top 7 Demolition Videos of 2020
Jan 5, 2021

2020 was a stressful year, so let’s decompress a little bit by reviewing some of the most fun demolition videos from the past year. A demolition that broke a 22 year old record highlights the bunch and I also stretch what the definition of “demolition” is a little bit, because I think the video is so cool. Don’t @ me.

Without further ado, here are the top 7 demolition videos from 2020:

Big Carl, as the huge crane was nicknamed, began work a few months later on the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in England. Now, the jobsite boasts an abundance of crane activity, a true site to behold, and it was captured on aerial footage for you to enjoy.

[VIDEO] New World Record For Tallest Building Demolished By Explosives
Dec 1, 2020

Back in 1998, the Hudson Department Store in downtown Detroit, Michigan was demolished by explosives. That building stood 410 feet tall across its 29 floors, making it, at the time, the tallest building to ever be taken down by implosion. The dust cloud covered many city blocks and the 20,000 unsuspecting people that came to watch the event. That record was just recently broken by a building over 100 feet taller than it.

Excavators aren’t typically meant to be dropped down to a lower level, but certain circumstances require it sometimes. The machines are obviously extremely heavy, so a large crane and proper rigging is required for it to happen safely. As a construction firm in Hong Kong, China recently found out, though, it’s a little tougher than it seems.

Usually, when a new development is going to go into a spot where a building already exists, that existing building gets blown into smithereens and its remaining rubble hauled away. BUT, there is apparently a different way to handle the situation now, which is by politely asking the building to walk away and to find a new home – well, kind of.

New Caterpillar Safety System Can Recognize if Driver is Too Tired to Drive

December 16, 2015 Shane Hedmond

Fatigue and the construction site do not mix, but unfortunately it happens more than we’d all like.  Construction work long and odd hours, with many jobs beginning extremely early in the morning or late at night.  Fatigue not only reduces productivity, but it’s a major safety concern, especially with regards to operating heavy machinery. According to the National Sleep Foundation (sounds like a fantastic place to work, I bet they have an amazing worktime nap schedule), yearly estimates for fatigue caused auto accidents average around 100,000, resulting in approximately 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses.

The “Hard Hat of the Future” Partners with Topcon to Make Augmented Reality a Reality in Construction

December 7, 2015 Shane Hedmond
daqri smart helmet

Way back in June, we introduced you to a developing technology that could eventually replace the standard hard hats we all know and love today.  Hard hats have served their purpose, to save lives and reduce head injuries in dangerous areas, but, if you think about it, they’re using up valuable real estate on a construction worker without any added benefits.  That’s why DAQRI decided to turn a traditional hard hat into a fully interactive, augmented reality head set which could unleash the true potential of a job site and its workers.
