Plastic bottles are probably inside more buildings than we’d care to know about, as I’ve personally (and unfortunately) been on enough job sites to see way too many bottles thrown around the job site, outside of trash containers.  A large percentage of the bottles that are lucky enough to make it in a dumpster, end up in a landfill where it takes them an estimated 500 years to fully decompose! In an effort to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in our nation’s landfills, one startup company is hoping to turn recycled plastic into the next green construction material.

[VIDEO] New Safety Gloves Can Keep Your Fingers From Being Smashed By A Hammer

Keeping your feet safe on the job site is a no brainer and boots with toe protection are almost always required.  The problem with gloves has always been trying to find a balance between adequately protecting hands and maintaining dexterity and functionality.  Too much protection could cause your hands to be immobilized or reduce your ability to actually use the tools you’re being protected against.  But gloves that are too comfortable may only act as an extra layer of skin and you’re left nursing a black and blue index finger.

There has been lots of robot talk in the past few years in construction, whether it’s trying to give humans the strength of a robot, 3D printing robots, or automated robots that can perform repetitive tasks on the job site.  Masonry has been a sought after market for the robotics industry, it seems that there’s a bit of an arms race to the top of the robotic brick laying mountain.  The latest competitor in this field is the Hadrian X, developed by Fastbrick Robotics in Perth, Australia.

GM Developed ‘Roboglove’ Could Make Construction Workers Stronger, Less Fatigued

With the introduction of 3D printers on construction job sites, many are worried that robots will begin taking over the jobs of hardworking tradesmen.  It’s more likely, however, that workers will be working WITH robots long before we’re completely replaced.  For example, one company that makes exoskeletons to help paraplegics walk is also developing an exoskeleton specifically for constructions workers that will allow them to lift 50 pound pieces of equipment with one finger. Now, a former NASA and General Motors (GM) partnership has turned into an expedition into the blue collar fields.

Imagine a world where the millions upon millions of square feet of roadway and parking lots across the world actually served a greater purpose than a flat surface to drive and park a vehicle.  That’s the world that Scott and Julie Brusaw, creators of Solar Roadways, imagine and their dream is becoming closer to reality after years of testing and research.

Steel Construction Barriers Hoping to Keep Workers Safer, Replace Concrete Barriers

June 28, 2016 Shane Hedmond
steel construction barrier

Road construction work is dangerous.  It changes driving patterns, which is especially hazardous if drivers are impaired or distracted.  There have been several teams of researchers and manufacturers that are attempting to make road construction safer for contractors, like this autonomous TMA truck from Royal Truck & Equipment and this smart safety vest designed by engineers at Virginia Tech, which gives workers a few seconds of warning is an object is approaching too quickly.

DeWalt Just Unleashed Revolutionary New Line of Batteries, 60V & 120V Tools

June 22, 2016 Shane Hedmond
dewalt cordless miter saw 2016

Speculation has been ongoing for weeks about DeWalt’s impending “World’s First” announcement that they’ve been teasing and today was the day the announcement was made.  In an effort to give cordless tools the same power of corded, the tool giant announced the release of 20V/60V flexible voltage batteries and a new line of cordless 60V and 120V tools.  The best part? The new ultra-powerful batteries are compatible with your favorite 20V tools that you already own.

FLEXVOLT, touted by DeWalt as the “World’s first battery that automatically changes voltage when you change tools,” will bring unprecedented power to cordless tools, especially workhorse tools like miter saws and circular saws.  Perhaps most importantly, two 60-volt batteries ($149 to $199 on Amazon) can be used in tandem to extend the life and the power of the batteries.  This system will be used in 120V tools, the first of which to be released is the 120V cordless/corded miter saw. The exciting new line of tools includes:

120V Cordless/Corded Sliding Miter Saw ($499-$799 on Amazon)

60V 7-1/4” Circular Saw ($179 on Amazon)

60V ½” VSR Stud & Joist Drill ($TBD on Amazon)

60V 8 ¼” Table Saw ($379 on Amazon)

60V Reciprocating Saw ($299 to $379 on Amazon)

60V 4 ½” – 6” Grinder with Kickback Brake ($TBD on Amazon)

All tools will incorporate the brushless motor technology that has made many tools so much more efficient in recent years.  With the brushless motor technology combined with the new batteries and FLEXVOLT accessories that were also announced today, you can expect up to twice the run time vs. standard DeWalt tools.  The accessories that DeWalt will release so far include circular saw blades engineered for low vibration, reciprocating saw blades with a finish that helps to reduce heat, and a self-feed pilot bit for faster cuts.

DeWalt had Twitter abuzz today due to the major announcement, which was in conjunction with the DeWalt media day.  Several other tools and accessories were announced as well, like this new DeWalt Toughbox for safe jobsite storage.

— Pro Tool Reviews (@ProToolReviews) June 21, 2016

It was certainly an exciting day for DeWalt tool lovers.  It’s even more exciting that you won’t have to replace your existing 20V tools to upgrade to the new batteries, unlike the last time DeWalt upgraded their batteries from 18V to 20V MAX.

FLEXVOLT will be made available to the public in the fall of 2016. To find out more about FLEXVOLT, visit flexvolt.dewalt.com.

Cool Tools: A Belt Clip for Your Tablet
Jul 7, 2017

For many construction superintendents and project managers across the world, tablets are becoming one of the most important tools on the job site.  They’re great for looking at plans, taking pictures, making notes, and running your favorite construction apps. Carrying a tablet does take up at least one of your hands, however, so it can be a hindrance if you need to help a co-worker lift material or climb a ladder.

Video Shows the Effects of a 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Has on a Building

June 10, 2016 Shane Hedmond
how building moves in earthquake

Being inside a building during an earthquake is, at best, a little unsettling, but it’s extremely difficult to measure the movement of an entire building.  Last year, researchers at MIT were able to use slow motion cameras to visualize how much a tower crane moved during normal conditions, which gave insight into the stress a crane undergoes.  Measuring the effects of an earthquake is a little trickier, so the US Geological Survey (USGS) had to get a little creative to capture it.
