There are a lot of different specialty construction contracting sectors within the industry and cruise ships are definitely one of them.  There are plenty of unique challenges when dealing with a moving ship versus a static building.  A recent accident highlighted the challenges when a crane collapsed on a cruise ship under renovations, injuring 8 people.

Crews were working on renovations of the Oasis of the Seas, one of Royal Caribbean’s largest ships, when the crane collapsed. The Orlando Sentinel reported that the ship was dry docked in Freeport, Bahamas and there were no passengers on board at the time of the accident.

Unfortunately, however, there were 8 injuries reported after the incident, though none are thought to be life threatening.  In addition to the injuries, there was damage caused to the Aqua Theater and several suites.

When the ship debuted in 2009, it was the world’s largest cruise ship, although it has since been surpassed by 3 others from Royal Caribbean. This is the second round of bad news for this particular ship, as hundreds of passengers were sickened by a Norovirus outbreak in January of this year.

Royal Caribbean Blog reports that the next 3 scheduled sailings for the damaged ship have already been canceled.

The Bahamas Press posted a video of the aftermath of the incident, which you can watch below:
