Video Shows the Effects of a 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Has on a Building

June 10, 2016 Shane Hedmond
how building moves in earthquake

Being inside a building during an earthquake is, at best, a little unsettling, but it’s extremely difficult to measure the movement of an entire building.  Last year, researchers at MIT were able to use slow motion cameras to visualize how much a tower crane moved during normal conditions, which gave insight into the stress a crane undergoes.  Measuring the effects of an earthquake is a little trickier, so the US Geological Survey (USGS) had to get a little creative to capture it.

New Craftsman Hammer Comes with Adjustable Claw For Superior Prying Ability

June 9, 2016 Shane Hedmond
Craftsman Flex Claw Hammer

Craftsman Flex Claw Hammer

Hammers haven’t changed much in hundreds of years, save a few minor tweaks with materials and aesthetics for branding.  But, though they haven’t changed, the old saying still goes, “hammers are the hammers of the construction industry.”  Don’t quote me on that. Everybody has a hammer, even people who can barely even hold a hammer.  Hammers are even used to make other hammers, here’s proof. So, when a new hammer hits the market, it’s not really that big of a deal, unless, of course, it’s the only one to provide an adjustable claw.

[Timelapse] Watch a 230 Foot Tunnel Be Installed Under Highway in 3 Days

June 7, 2016 Shane Hedmond
a12 highway tunnel netherlands

There’s no easier way to make thousands of people mad then to screw up traffic for an extended period of time.  Road construction can also be extremely dangerous for road crews working throughout the world.  It seems like I read a story about a construction worker killed by a motorist every single day, so whatever it takes to lower that number can only be a good thing.

houston apartment fire

When a small fire inside a $50 million Houston high rise apartment complex suddenly turned the 5th floor into a fiery inferno, construction worker Curtis Reissig became trapped on the unfinished balcony as he waited for fire crews to save him.  The fire happened in March of 2014, completely destroying the almost complete building shell, but new footage from one of the firemen’s body cam shows an up close view of rescue.

Watch a 25 Story High Rise Crumble to the Ground in Demolition

June 3, 2016 Shane Hedmond
roystonhill flats demo

It’s Friday, so what better way to end the week than some explosives bringing down an old residential high rise? It seems as though residential buildings are being torn down all over Glasgow, Scotland, as we just saw 6 buildings implode simultaneously (well, almost) late last year.  While those 6 towers had reportedly become a hotbed for crime and drug use, this latest demolition in Roystonhill, Glasgow is making way for around hundreds of new homes in the area simply due to a “decline in popularity of the flats.”

Report: 55% of OSHA’s “Severe Violators” List are Construction Companies

June 2, 2016 Shane Hedmond
osha logo

If the construction industry isn’t talking about the labor shortage at the moment, the focus is on safety.  Billions of dollars and thousands of hours are spent each year trying to keep workers safe on the job site, as construction is consistently a leader in job site injuries and illnesses.  With so many construction companies currently operating in America, there are bound to be a few bad apples when it comes to safety and unfortunately those also make up a majority of the bad apples across all industries in the country.

[Video] Jenga Played with 600lb Blocks and Construction Equipment is Way More Fun Than You’ve Ever Had

May 31, 2016 Shane Hedmond
CAT Jenga

If you’ve played Jenga before, you know that it can get pretty intense as the blocks start to get a little wobbly.  A typical Jenga block dimension is 0.59 in x 0.98 in x 2.95 in, and weighs ounces, so if the tower falls, the stakes aren’t really that severe, other than a humiliating loss to your friend, family member, or mortal enemy.  Now, multiply that size by 10,000 and you get the scale of the Jenga pieces that CAT put together for their #BuiltForIt campaign.
